new discoveries and dead fish

This is a report.
We found a dead fish ( female) on 25th June 2008 .
How it died? : We suspected that it died because of not being able to blend in to the new surrounding so it died.

We found this egg like thing around the pot of plant and we suspected that it is either a water snail egg or is a earth worm egg.

Attack of water snails and others

As you can see, the log had been attack by about 20 to 30 water snails.

The picture above shows a damselfly nymph. It was found dead outside our fish tank.
*The pictures might not be clear. We are sorry for the low quality of the pictures.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
After the school reopens, we had found out that our system had been invaded by the water snails.
There was about 100 water snails found living in our fish tank.
For the safety of the fishes and the system, we had changed the water and the gravels that had alot of water snails living in it.
Till now, the almost all of the water snail had been removed and the tank is clean for the fishes to live in.
We had planned to get 2 more new aquatic plants to replace for the ones that had been invaded by the water snails.
More information about the attacks of the water snails will be stated in the next post.

Different in light

An example of fluorescent light!!!
Example of Tungstun

Tungstun and Fluorescent which one is better?

After some research, we had found out that Fluorescent light is better as it is more efficient than Tungsten light bulbs of an equivalent brightness. This is because a greater proportion of the power used is converted to usable light and a smaller proportion is converted to heat, allowing fluorescent lamps to run cooler.

Tungsten light has the highest melting point (3,422 °C) (6,192 °F), lowest vapor pressure and (at temperatures above 1,650 °C) the highest tensile strength. Tungsten has the lowest coefficient f thermal expansion of any pure metal. Alloying small quantities of tungsten with steel greatly increases its toughness. ( Overall Tungsten produce more heat)

~Group Meeting!~

Today we meet at school to discuss the project.
As we were doing so over 10 water snails and a Damselfly nymph were captured.
We concluded that it was not a mosquito,

as it does not float up to the surface for air.
We also concluded that it could not be a Dragonfly Nymph,
as its body was too big to be the pest in our tank.

And with the consulting of some Green Club Members we were able to find out that it was a Damselfly nymph

~Congrats!~

Congratulations!
Our team has been selected to represent our class!
We have noticed that there are water snails in our tanks,
we are planning to remove as soon as possible
as they might eat the aquatic plants.
Updates: The water snails had been remove.

2 new fish have been added into the tank.
Now there is a total of 11 fish.
Both of the new fishes are female.

This is a report.

Due to the lack of knowledge of rearing pregnant fish, one of our pregnant fish died.
(It died on 13th May)
The pregnant fish was left in a pail filled with fresh tap water and a very strong air pump.
However, the tap water in the pail should be either left in the open for 1 ~ 2 days or water from the fish tank.
No air pump should be left in the pail as it would scare the pregnant fish and prevent it from giving birth with ease.
A few weeds should have been placed to allow the newly born guppies to hide from their mother.

Recently we have discovered that before the pregnant fish was isolated it gave birth to one baby guppy. It was discovered only today (15th May)
The fish had developed a small tail and has darker eyes than a new born guppy should have.
Now there are 10 fishes.

This plant is about 17.9 cm long/tall (from stem to leaf) and it had grown 0.8 cm longer.

This plant is about 14.7 cm long/tall (from stem to leaf) and it had grown 0.2 cm longer.
This two plants (shown above) are the plants we are going to measure every week to see if it is growing healthy.
Doulble-check on our project
Plants: Growing well, none going to dry up...
Fishes: Strength:9 Present 9 ;All healthy
Water pump: Working good, no problem with it.

Report on dead fish

This is the report of how the two fishes died.
One of them passed away on 18th of April 2008.
Found: It is found lying dead right beside the fish tank.
Reason(s) of death: Some of us suspected that someone had removed the fish out of the tank and then threw it on the floor .We also suspected that the fish jumped out of the tank. However, the chances are slim as there's only a small hole and the hole is covered by the aquatic plants.
Colour of the 1st dead fish: Grey/Female
The other fish passed away on 23rd of April 2008.
Found: It was found dead in the tank.
Reason(s) of death: On 22nd April it was found that one of its fins was injured so it could not move.It could not go up to the surface for food and it died of hunger.
Colour of the 2nd dead fish: Red/Male

It look good in the tank,

The other aquatic plant was thrown away

as it was half-dead and was a waste of space.

We had a new ornament,
(Given by Avery)
We placed the ornament in the center of the Money Plant.

This is the close up veiw of the ornament.

In total we spent $4.40 on the new fish and aquatic plants.

~Evil Goldfish!~

The current state of our plant.
Still alive, thank heavans!

Our Aquatic plant is dying.

Its leafs are getting yellow.

This is me!
(One of the "brave crew")
Next to a plastic bag with a gold fish in it.

This is Eng Soon

(Another one of the "brave crew")

This is what was in the plastic bag.

4 goldfish

We literally dumped the goldfish in.

And of course the tank overflowed with water.Too much water!!!!
See what I mean?
We had to transfer the water.
Then after recess we noticed that the goldfish were biting the guppies!
So we tried to remove them by hand.

Of course it did not work.
So we used a PROPER net.

Crusing the goldfish in our breathe we,
(or I) went home.
